Tom Olsen

Tom Olsen has thirty years of continual association with one of the largest cattle feed lots in the world giving him a vast amount of knowledge in his profession as a Livestock Nutritionist.

Tom's education includes a Master of Science degree in Animal Science & Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Idaho. His dedication to livestock and nutrition has helped guide him in developing consistent premium quality feeds, vitamins & mineral supplements for cattle and horses.

During Tom's 30-year association with Simplot Land & Livestock Division, he has been and is currently their nutritionist for feedlots and cow-calf operations and helped develop the Pride Commercial Feed Program for Western Stockman's. IN 1984, he formed Olsen Livestock Consultants, Inc. and is currently working with ten feedlots (approximately 500,000 head of cattle), purebred and commercial cow-calf operations located in the Pacific Northwest and previously in Hawaii. Internationally, Tom helped design and build the first commercial feedlot in Turkey and consultant on Livestock Nutrition in China.

Though the cattle industry has been Tom's livelihood, horses have always been Tom's passion. Tom purchased his first cutting horse in the late 80's. While spending time at the trainer's barn, he took notice of the feeding regime of mixing several supplements to place daily on the horses' grain. When Tom asked about the "special mix" the answer was to give the horse the vitamins/minerals, joint supplement and another additive for a nice hair coat. Tom took this as a challenge to develop one supplement that provided the horse all the necessary needs and be easy and time efficient to feed. Tom shortly discovered that most supplements on the market contained inorganic minerals that the horse could not utilize because the minerals were not in an available form. This led to the development of EquiLife and Equilife Gold Feed supplement for performance horses.

Continuing to expand his horse program, that now including breeding and raising young horses, Tom realized the need to develop a hay/grain pellet that contained the same base ingredients as Equilife and provide a complete feed that could be fed in addition to forage. Tom believes that many unsoundness issues in performance horses today are partly due to genetics and mostly to nutrition of the broodmare prior to conception, gestation and the weanling thru the 3-year old year. Feeding these young horses right will develop the proper strong bone structure and muscle development required by today's competition. The cultivation of 15 years in Equine Nutrition has led to the development of Pride Plus Performance Horse Feed, which Tom believes is the superior product on the market that is truly ONE feed that can be used on broodmares, yearlings, performance horses and mature horses. "So many horsemen do not understand the nutritional needs for the stages of a horse's life, and end up buying several products to fit the needs of all their horses. Horse owners need to understand the ingredient list on the feed tag, determine the number of byproducts in what they are buying so you just don't throw your money down the drain". The products used in the Pride Plus Performance Horse Feed are of the highest quality and contains no byproducts. The alfalfa hay, which is a key feed ingredient due to the quality of protein and fiber in horse's diet, comes from one of the best sources for alfalfa, Idaho.

Tom and wife Tracy reside in Bellevue, Idaho, seventeen miles south of the famous Sun Valley Ski Resort. Both enjoy their horse ranch in Bellevue, which allows them to pursue their many cutting horse interests and maintain their professional lives as well. Both are very active and successful in the local cuttings to cutting on the Pacific Coast to Fort Worth Texas.
